Summer Update

Thanks to Gram for reminding me to post new pictures. Time has really gotten away from me. Everyone warned me that three kids would be crazy, but I thought, "How hard can it be?" Collin was such an easy baby that I figured another baby couldn't be that hard. Well Dylan decided to prove me wrong. He is most happy on me; nursing, being held, worn in the Snugli or Moby. That's where you'll find him. Which makes it hard to get a good picture of him. Set him down and he protests. Naps are only about 20 minutes unless I'm holding or wearing him. Thankfully he is my best sleeper at night.... once I get him to sleep. That part takes a couple hours of feeding, screaming, swaddling, etc. But once he's down he sleeps 6-8 hours. He is smiling more now, and even giggles! He loves sucking on his fingers, so much so that I think he might already be teething.

The big brothers are non-stop action. Collin is really into Cars and trains and Austin is my superhero. This means you can usually find me simultaneously playing cars and Batman (or some other heroic figure) while nursing or holding Dylan. I'm only able to spend some time on this update because Nathan has Dylan in the Snugli and the other two are napping.

Welcome Dylan Clark

The Baby Burkhardt blog is once again home to a baby. We welcomed Dylan Clark into the world on his due date, March 23 at 10:10pm after only five minutes of pushing. He was 8lb. 6oz. and 20" long... our smallest baby. He is already an over achiever, having pooped before they could even get a diaper on him. Way to go!
Now a week old, he is so loved by his big brothers who just can't get enough of him. They are constantly kissing him and checking on him. They fight over who gets to hold him and pat his back for burps. This little guy is so loved!

Time flies! We enjoyed October with a few pumpkin patches, carving pumpkins and dressing up. We also had our ultrasound and found out that Baby Burkhardt #3 is a boy! Click below to see what we've been up to.

Big News!

If you haven't heard, there will be another Baby Burkhardt in March 2010. We are so excited to add another great kid to the brood. Kristen's been feeling pretty yucky this time around, but so thankful that the boys are still young enough to nap together so she can get some rest too. One of the perks of having kids close together!
We've had a fun summer. Click below to see our web album of our fun trips and moments at home. Collin is 18 months now and talking more and more. Sometimes we understand what he's saying. His new favorite things are the trains a good friend passed down to us - a ton of Thomas trains! And he loves his toy motorcycle that he calls "pa pa" because his Pa Pa drives a Harley.
Austin has entered a great phase of a million questions a day. He is so curious and still loves to read books all the time. He is dressing up more now and pretending a lot too.

Summer Fun

We've been loving this summer! Lots of playing out side, picking fresh fruit and going to the fair. Collin is talking. He says about 15 words. Mom, Duh, and of course Truck. We love driving around and listening to him in the backseat "Truck! Bus! Ball!" Austin is 3 and has become such a big boy. We are still learning to share and let Mom and Dad be the boss, but he is so much fun and just loves to learn new things. Here are some new pictures:

Spring Fun

We've really enjoyed the spring. With Collin walking we've done some fun trips to the zoo, strawberry picking, parks and lots of playing in the yard. We also cellebrated Austin's third birthday with a safari in the park. Click below to see pictures.

At 13 months, Collin is officially walking. He has his hands up in the air like Frankenstein and he is so excited to be among the upright, now. Here are the latest pics from our one year photo shoot.

Collin turns 1

As February ends, I am amazed once again how fast our kids grow up! Collin turned one this month. We had a small family party and he didn't enjoy it. He is such a sensitive little guy. As soon as people arrived he became over stimulated. He opened a couple presents, but Olivia and Austin had to open most of them as I held a crying birthday boy. He enjoyed his first taste of sugar. I made a banana cake frosted with whipped cream. Bananas are his favorite food. By the time he was finished with cake and a bath he went straight to bed.

January 2009

This is Collin's last full month as a "baby." He is still cruising and shows no interest in letting go to walk, but I'm in no hurry. Collin is signing more, music, milk and he waves and claps. He also says "mama" and "dada".
Austin and Collin are starting to play together. It seems like we were indoors the entire month of January; someone was sick every day of the month. We just passed the cold around the family. So when we weren't wiping noses we took a few seconds to snap some cute pictures.
Austin is TOTALLY potty trained and actually goes to the bathroom by himself and pulls up his own pants. Whoo-hoo! I wasn't sure this day would ever come.
I've started writing down all the funny stuff Austin says. Here are some highlights:
"I have a surprise in my pants," Austin tells me from the back seat in a sneaky voice. Dreading a potty-training accident, I asked what he had. It was just an acorn he found at the park. PHEW!
"I'm not scared, cuz God's here and he's my friend... and Thomas [the train] is my friend, too." This was before bed. He's struggling with being afraid of the dark and keeps a Thomas the Train under his pillow.
"This is my brother. He takes care of me and I love him very much," he told Daddy at the train museum as he patted Collin's head. So sweet!

December 2008

December was fantastic! Collin had his first Christmas and slept through some of it. He loves the new toys. He's drawn towards anything with wheels, so Austin has learned to share his cars. The biggest attraction is our new piece of furniture - Austin's car. Collin cruises around the outside while Austin sits in it. We've taken it driving a few times, but it's been too cold and wet to do much outside enjoyment.
This was the first Christmas that Austin really understood what it was all about. He loved cooking with me, decorating, and watching Christmas videos. We baked cookies together for the neighbors, wrapped presents together, and I even let him play with my nativity scene to reenact the true Christmas story.
We feel so incredibly blessed with the kindness, love and generosity of all our friends and family. With out them, this Christmas wouldn't have been nearly as exciting.

We are having a blast this Christmas season with two kids. Austin really gets it this year and we've been cooking, decorating, and listening to Christmas music together. Collin is growing so fast. He has 7 teeth and is cruising all over the house. We are looking forward to his first Christmas.

For Halloween, Austin dressed up as Bob the Builder and Collin was Tigger. We had fun carving pumpkins for the first time and Austin loved played games at a church carnival. There are a few other pictures of Collin starting to stand and crawl.

A friend just told me, "Collin is almost a year old!" Can it be true? It seems like I just had him, but yes, Collin is now 8 months old and really moving around. Austin has also seemed to grow up over night. He has complete conversations with me about everything. The latest laugh was when I commented on his stinky feet and he said, "I not have stinky feet. My bottom's stinky." And his face was completely serious as I tried to stifle my laughter.
Collin is sleeping through the night (mostly). We still have those awful nights when Collin cries, which wakes Austin, who then cries when we put him back to bed, which prevents Collin from falling back asleep and I have to feed Collin to get our family back to sleep. It's so much different with two kids now. Things I could do with one baby (like put a pillow over my head as he cried himself to sleep) are much harder now. But other things are easier, like finger foods. Finger foods are now defined as whatever Collin finds on the floor after Austin eats lunch (Ok, that's only happened a couple times). Overall, Collin is a very happy baby and loves watching his big brother play guitar. Austin has been giving us all concerts with his ukulele. They've even started napping together!
Life for mom and dad is great, too. Sometimes i forget to include us... it's all about the kids! But God is so good and faithful. He is always teaching us things about His character. As we develop as parents we are learning so much about Our Father; how much he loves us and desires good things in this life for us.

September 2008

We've had a busy summer. It's great to see blue skies again; I was starting to think we were going to have a permanently gray summer from all the fires. We are spending a lot of time outside since it's been a pretty mild summer. Austin loves parks and playing in the water. Collin is content laying on a blanket in the shade, which means he eventually works his way to the grass and the dirt. So much for keeping him clean! I think having boys means never having things clean. That's a hard realization for me. Sticky car, sticky floors, sticky furniture. But one day, when they are all in school I'll be able to scrub the layers of goo and wish they were still small and sugar coated.

Collin is six months now and has two little teeth sprouting through. He was sleeping through the night, but teething has disrupted that. Austin wakes around 5:30 ready to start the day, so we are all pretty tired. Collin is now rolling both ways and this has helped him sleep because now he is sleeping on his tummy. It also means he can get around and find new things to chew on. He can almost stay sitting up by himself and is almost scooting on his belly. Soon he'll be mobile and getting into everything!
I'm so blessed that they are happy boys, and starting to nap at the same time.

Collin is Four Months Old

Collin turned four months and we started some rice cereal in the evening. That seems to be his crankiest time of the day, and he seems to be so much happier after he eats. He's a messy eater, though! He's also starting to reach out and grab his toys, which makes his tummy time more enjoyable. He's spending less time on his back and Austin loves entertaining his little brother with a story (or a tantrum). He's getting so big and chunky; he weighed in at a little over 17 pounds at his four month check up. Here are some new pictures of Collin James:

Summer Fun

We've enjoyed our summer so far, although we are sick of the smoke. It's not keeping us from having fun. We've gone to the zoo, the beach, and the local swimming lagoon. Austin had a week in underwear. He was so excited to wear his new underwear that he wouldn't keep his diaper on, but after countless puddles on the floor he realized that life is more fun in a diaper. So we'll give it another try later. He also started his first sports team. We are taking a Mommy/Daddy & Me soccer class and he has loved it so far. He just runs around with Daddy and a bunch of other kids and lots of soccer balls! It's so cute to watch, and it provides a good break from the tantrums he has at home when things aren't exactly the way he demands. Two years old is a spirited time!

May 2008

May was busy! Collin turned 3 months and found his fingers. We went to Fairytale Land in Oakland, Fairytale Town in Sacramento, a carnival and a fair, strawberry picking, and even tried to fly kites for the first time. Being out and about with two kids is a little harder and I'm so thankful for all of our grandmas that are always up for an excursion. We have a couple playgroups that keep us busy throughout the week and it makes time fly even faster. My boys are growing up right before my eyes. Austin has such a full vocabulary now and he's been a good helper with Collin. He's so eager to play with him, but for now he just puts the pacifier (pee-fer) in his mouth. Soon they'll be fighting over toys!

Austin's Party

Austin had so much fun at his second birthday party. It was a music themed party and Kindermusik teacher, Miss Jane, came and performed some of Austin's favorite songs. Our family and a few friends had a great time singing, dancing and playing instruments. When the parachute came out the kids went crazy with delight. Then we finished off the party with cake and ice cream.

It's official - Austin's entered the "terrible twos" which really aren't as terrible as they were a few months ago. Austin's able to tell me just about anything he wants. If he doesn't know the word, he learns it and his vocabulary grows every day. He's a silly boy and he loves to laugh and make us laugh. But he is particular and wants to be the boss. He wants to decide what to eat, what song we are listening to in the car, whether or not he'll wear shoes and usually his requests are contrary to what is good for him. Usually if I give him some choices we avoid the tantrum.

Collin is such a sweet baby. He really goes with the flow. He is giggling now! It seems so soon, but it's true. All you have to do is talk to him and his whole face lights up. He still sleeps a lot of the time, but when he's awake we have some good giggles.

Collin's First Month

It seems like he's always been a part of our family. Was there really a time when we only had one kid? Nathan is back to work, and I've got two kids at home with me now. This past week was rough - Austin's teething, fighting a cold, and wants to do everything himself. Collin is a piece of cake compared to a toddler. As long as I keep Collin fed, dry, and moving he's quiet and peaceful. I wear him a lot more than I wore Austin. When I wear him in a sling, he sleeps so soundly.
I forgot how messy life is with a newborn... the spit up, poop, and pee. Today I'm covered in pee and spit up. Yesterday it was projectile poop while I was changing his diaper. But it's great having a sweet little baby again. He's starting to coo when he's awake. He can be awake for up to an hour at a time now, and he's sleeping pretty well through the night. I'm usually only up once to feed him at around 3. I'm sure that will change with the growth spurts around the corner, but for now we are all pretty well rested and loving our new family.

Welcome Collin James

It seems like I was going to be pregnant forever, but on February 18, Collin James finally joined our family. I was admitted to the hospital on the 17th with high blood pressure and it was determined that I had preeclampsia, a condition that can lead to seizures. I was induced and after a few hours my labor was well underway. At 5:30am Collin James entered the world.
Now we're home and adjusting to life with two kids. Austin loves his new brother and we're working on touching him softly. Nathan is so great and I don't know what I'll do when he goes back to work. He is taking care of Austin and everything around the house as I nurse Collin. I forgot how much time that takes! Enjoy the pictures and we'll up

Waiting for Baby Brother

A week from my due date and we are all getting excited to meet #2 (yet to be named). I think we'll just call him brother, since that's what Austin calls him anyway. Here are some pictures from an ultrasound we had done at 37 weeks. We wanted to get an estimate of his birth weight and it looks like we have another big baby. At the time of the ultrasound he was already over 7 pounds. But I'm staying optimistic and we'll try for another natural birth, so all prayers are appreciated.

The first picture is his profile, with the top of his head on the right and his nose sticking up around the center of the picture. The next is a front view of his nose, lips and chin. The ultrasound tech noticed the fat on his face already... Great, a big head! That should make for a smooth delivery. But we did notice that he's beautiful and it was so cool to see all his parts moving and working. Thank you God for a healthy baby!

Austin at 21 Months

I feel like Austin just keeps getting more and more fun. Now he's putting two words together. The big laugh today was "Big butt." He kept saying it over and over as he played in his new room. We realized, however, that he was talking about his new bed. "Big Bed!" Sometimes it takes us a while to figure out what he's saying.

As we wait for brother to come we are really enjoying our time with just Austin. Our home is filled with things for the baby and Austin likes to point to the baby's stuff and say "bruder's." Then he points to his stuff and says "Au-tin's." We can't wait to meet Austin's "bruder."

Austin at 18 Months

Austin is so tall! I'm amazed at how many shoe sizes he's grown through since the last post. It seems like everyday I put a pair of pants on him that fit him fine and now they are capris. So he's constantly mistaken for a two year old, which means people expect him to carry on a conversation. I find myself explaining to strangers "He's only 18 months, he's big for his age."
He does surprise me quite often with new words. Today we went to Grammy's house and he walked to the barking dog in the back yard and said "No, no Shadow," with a wagging finger as he scolded the dog for barking too loud. His latest words are more "mo," turtle "tu-tu," cookie "cu-cu," uh-oh," a more mature "bye" instead of the baby talk "ba ba" and ding-dong when we go to someone's door.
He's still picking up new signs and refining old signs. When he wants a cookie (a graham cracker, but don't tell Austin) he pulls out all his skills - signing cookie and please, while saying "cu-cu". Am I a bad mother for giving in to such a cute display of superior knowledge?
While we do have the occasional melt down tantrum (usually when he's tired) Austin is a lot of fun to be around. I'm just trying to enjoy being a mother of one before #2 comes along and Austin is no longer the baby.

07_11 Austin 18 Months

Fifteen Months (aka 1.25 years old)

Now that Austin's reached his first year, the updates won't be so frequent. Things just aren't happening as fast as they used to. But when I look back at his first birthday I realized just how much he's changed.

Austin is now 27.5 pounds and 33 inches tall. He's more the size of an 18 month old and he's running like one to. He says about a dozen words and he seems to be talking in his own language all the time. Am I really supposed to know what it all means? His favorite words are still mama, dada, gaga (grandma), mammie (grammy), cracker, and baby. And he still uses a lot of baby signs. Daddy has taught him "please" so he's started to sign "more please" at every meal. He's refusing to eat meat and I'm starting to wonder if I have a vegetarian on my hands as I prepare fake chicken nuggets and tofu.

Gone are the days of two naps. Now it's just one late morning nap which was timed perfectly as I ended the first trimester of my pregnancy and started to get some energy back. I'll probably update again at 18 months so check back soon.

One Year Old

It's hard to believe that Austin is a year old, but at the same time it feels like he's always been with us. He has turned into a real "boy," as he loses his baby-ness. We spent the day with friends today, his big day, and had his one year portraits taken. Now he's a walking, talking, signing toddler. He uses baby sign to communicate things like milk, eat, phone, more, ball and he tilts his head when he's sleepy. And he says da-da, ma-ma, bu (book) and ba (ball). He's moving faster on his feet each day and rarely crawls anymore.

We have enjoyed this year more than any year of our lives and want to say thank you to all of our family and friends who have been so supportive and loving. We thank God for you and your support in raising our son with Godly values.

A New Cousin

Austin's cousin was born this week on April 18. Olivia Violet Croft was born to my sister, Julia and weighed 9lb. 2oz. She came into the world quickly and relatively easily, after only 16 minutes of pushing. Thanks to all the family and friends who were praying for her! We are so glad to have a new baby in the family.

Eleven Months

At 23 pounds and 30 inches, Austin is almost walking! Although he has taken his first steps, he's still a ways from actually walking on his own. He can take two or three steps as he navigates from one piece of furniture to the next.
He is so busy now that his hands are more coordinated; he can flip, turn, twist, push, and open and close things now. Door knobs are an endless source of entertainment - that comes from Daddy's side of the family. I think eating is his favorite pastime. Cheese, fruit, sweet potato "fries", zucchini, yogurt, and crackers are his favorites right now and he rarely lets me feed him mush. So independent!
He dances when he hears music, uses the sign for "more," and says mama, dada, and gog (dog, cat, bird, etc.) He's such a happy boy and we are so blessed.

Ten Months

At ten months, Austin's personality is really developing. He is making different faces now, like "oh" and he wiggles his finger on his bottom lip to make a cute "bubu" noise. We play cars and he makes a "vroom" sound and he's saying "mum mum" and "da da." He's also discovered how to put his toys into containers, although he's still a long way from cleaning up after himself.
He's still cruising the furniture and he can even climb low furniture. He likes pushing the kitchen chairs around and he is still trying to get to the fireplace. He's been seen balancing without holding on, but not often and usually while he's distracted.
I think the biggest milestone this month was the stomach flu. He gave us a good scare by refusing to eat or drink for most of a day, but he's all better now.

Austin 9 Months

Nine Months

Austin is so curious! This month he really began exploring. Now that he is cruising, he can find his toys on his own, but that also means he can find the TV, fireplace, and anything that may have fallen on the floor. So he has learned words like "yucky," "ouch," and "no, no." He is getting so fast on his hands and knees and he likes running from me when I come after him.
He's got 6 teeth and loves to use them. He's even been known to bite feet, so watch out!

Eight Months

What a month! Austin has learned to crawl with his belly off the ground, pull up on the furniture to a stand, and now he's "furniture walking." It seems like it happened overnight. He likes to stick his tongue out at you and says "pa pa pa" and "bo bo bo." He's eating finger foods like cheerios and toast.

This month started with a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where we saw jelly fish, sharks, rays, and penquins. Austin had a blast playing in the baby area.
We had a wonderful first Christmas, surrounded by all of his grandparents. Christmas morning they all came over and spoiled him rotten with tons of new toys and clothes. We've put away the rattles and now he's playing with big boy toys.

November, 2006

Seven Months

Austin loves to eat! He's starting to eat with his hands and loves the Gerber veggie puffs.

Most of his time is spent moving around from toy to toy, putting everything in his mouth. And with all that chewing he's sprouted two bottom teeth and the top one is on it's way.

There's no stopping this little man now. He is moving all over the place with his "commando" crawl. He doesn't get his belly off the ground; he uses his arms and legs to move around like he's in the army. And while he's moving he talks with sounds like "mmmmm" and "ba ba ba." And he still loves blowing raspberries.

Six Months

Has it really been half a year since Austin was born? It seems like just yesterday that he was only able to suck, sleep, and poop! Now he's rolling all over the place. He puts everything in his mouth. I turned my back for a minute yesterday and he was eating my shoe. All those toys and he'd rather gum the chair leg or slobber all over a magazine. I can see white nubs on his gums, but no teeth yet. He can sit by himself now, but he still throws himself back after a few minutes. He loves his vegetables! So far he's devoured everything he's tried - sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots and peas. Next, it's fruit. This month he tried the swing at the park for the first time. His infant swing is long gone, now. He's on to the big boy swing!

First Haircut

Austin had his first haircut this Saturday, October 14. He was such a good boy! My hairdresser, Shelley, used the clippers and took off all the dark baby hair. Austin tried to eat the clippers as she buzzed his head. Now he's left with only the blonde roots. He's our little towhead now!

Five Months

Now that Austin is five months he's moving all over! He rolls around all the time and won't stay put. He's getting some chubiness now that he's getting more formula during the day. On his "birthday," last night, he slept eight hours. He can even stay balanced in a sitting position on his own for a few seconds. He is so much fun and seems to be doing something new every day.

Lake Tahoe

We took Austin to Lake Tahoe and had a great time! Austin dipped his toes in the water and we even visited Donner Lake.

Rolling Over

Baby's First Game

Nathan's office hosted an employee appreciation day in September, so we took Austin to his first baseball game.

Eating Cereal!

Austin ate his first solid food today. Well, by most of our standards it wasn't too solid - two teaspoons of runny rice powder and milk. But he loved it! He swallowed most of it and only spilled a little when he hit Nathan's hand. When it was all over he was looking for more!

Four Months

Austin's latest trick is sucking on his toes! This month he not only discovered his feet, but he loves to suck on his big toes. He grabs everything in sight now and tries to put it in his mouth. He grabs plates off the table, and the silverware out of our hands while we're eating. He's awake for most of the day and only naps for an hour at the most. He is much louder now and has developed a high pitched whine that is most attractive. We have so much fun playing with toys and having tummy time. He is 13 pounds 9 ounces and 26 1/2 inches long. Getting so big!
We got the green light to start solids, now that he's four months. Check the blog soon for his first food pictures!

Three Months

Austin is 12 pounds, four ounces and 25 and a half inches long. He loves sucking on his hands and is spending more time on his tummy now that his neck is stronger. His face is so expressive and his legs are so active that I think he'll either grow up to be an actor or a soccer player. Or both!

He is so happy and has even giggled with us a few times. As I look at Nathan's baby pictures I am amazed at how much Austin looks like his daddy. (Nathan is in the yellow. Here he is four months old.)

Two Months

At two months Austin is smiling, giggling, and cooing a lot more. He loves bathtime and playing with mommy and daddy. He also likes car rides and takes the best naps while shopping.

One Month

Austin is one month old, now. He's doing tummy time and is getting so strong. He likes kisses and had his first smile while Daddy was kissing him. Of course, his favorites are eating and sleeping.

3 Weeks Old
